Arithmetic, Logicism, and Frege’s Definitions

چکیده

This paper describes an exegetical puzzle that lies at the heart of Frege’s writings—how to reconcile his logicism with definitions and claims about definitions. It also reviews two interpretations try resolve this puzzle: “explicative interpretation” “analysis interpretation.” defends explicative interpretation critiques careful sophisticated defenses analysis given by Michael Dummett Patricia Blanchette. Specifically, I argue texts either are inconsistent or do not support it. defend from recent charge it cannot make sense logicism. While provide interpretation’s full solution puzzle, show its main competitor is seriously problematic.

Logicism, interpretability, and Knowledge of Arithmetic

A crucial part of the contemporary interest in logicism in the philosophy of mathematics resides in its idea that arithmetical knowledge may be based on logical knowledge. Here an implementation of this idea is considered that holds that knowledge of arithmetical principles may be based on two things: (i) knowledge of logical principles and (ii) knowledge that the arithmetical principles are re...

Forcing for hat inductive definitions in arithmetic

By forcing, we give a direct interpretation of ÎDω into Avigad’s FP. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is one of the simplest applications of forcing to “real problems”.

Logic, Logics, and Logicism

The paper starts with an examination and critique of Tarski’s wellknown proposed explication of the notion of logical operation in the type structure over a given domain of individuals as one which is invariant with respect to arbitrary permutations of the domain. The class of such operations has been characterized by McGee as exactly those definable in the language L∞,∞. Also characterized sim...

Russell’s Logicism

Logicism is typically de ned as the thesis that mathematics reduces to, or is an extension of, logic. Exactly what “reduces” means here is not always made entirely clear. (More de nite articulations of logicism are explored in section 5 below.) While something like this thesis had been articulated by others (e.g., Dedekind 1888 and arguably Leibniz 1666), logicism only became a widespread subje...

Induction and inductive definitions in fragments of second order arithmetic

A fragment with the same provably recursive functions as n iterated inductive definitions is obtained by restricting second order arithmetic in the following way. The underlying language allows only up to n + 1 nested second order quantifications and those are in such a way, that no second order variable occurs free in the scope of another second order quantifier. The amount of induction on ari...
